The East Peoria Downtown Project has been going on since the summer of 2010. This new project will be a big boost to East Peoria and the surrounding areas. It is also a face-lift for the city of East Peoria. All of the new businesses are going inside an 86-acre lot that has sat empty since the Caterpillar buildings that once stood there have been torn down. Some of the new businesses include Target, Costco, Bass Pro Shops and a number of others.

Costco opens in Downtown East Peoria

EAST PEORIA, Il — The new 148,000 square foot Costco officially opened downtown November 14 and local citizens are shopping at an all-time high.

Though membership is $55 per year, that is not stopping shoppers getting their memberships close to the holiday season.

“I think it’s great, I used to be a Sam’s Club member, but Costco is so much closer and newer, and it just makes it easier on me,” said Washington resident Ashley Dorich. “I don’t have to drive 30 minutes to get stuff I need, and it’s just easier.”

The nearest Costco to the East Peoria location is located in Bolingbrook, a suburb of Chicago and one shopper drove all the way from Galesburg to get in on the opening day deals and shop in the brand new store.

“I’d been to Costco in Bolingbrook and I loved it,” said Carol Makstrom. “It’s nice to have a wholesale store like this in central Illinois”

According to Costco’s website they are a “membership warehouse club, dedicated to bringing our members the best possible prices on quality brand-name merchandise.”

Inside the store, it is never ending. They offer name brand items ranging from purses to engagement rings and televisions.

They also sell organic foods, and include a full bakery. Another option is right across the parking lot where you can fill up your car at their own gas station. Or while you are shopping, get your tires checked at their tire service center.

Along with Costco, Target will be another highly anticipated opening, as it is slated to open elate 2012 to early 2013.

Local officials also think that the Costco and the downtown project are doing wonders for the city of East Peoria.
“I think it is great for the city of East Peoria,” State Senator Dave Koehler said. “It’s not only creating over 300 construction jobs, but it’s also going to create over 400 jobs once Target, Gordman’s, and all these other businesses opening.”

Hours for Costco are Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., Saturday 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m..
