Adding a new member to the family around the holidays seems like a great idea, especially if that new member is furry and friendly. TAPS Animal Adoption Center and Shelter is a no-kill shelter in Pekin that can make that a reality for people in the area this holiday season. Check out a behind-the-scenes video of the shelter and see what the volunteers and staff who keep the place going do on a daily basis.

ADOPTING FOR THE HOLIDAYS

Adding a new member to the family around the holidays seems like a great idea, especially if that new member is furry and friendly.

TAPS (Tazewell Animal Protective Center) Animal Adoption Center and Shelter is a no-kill shelter in Pekin that not only helps animals get adopted, but also saves them from other shelters. During the holidays, they have an especially high adoption rate, giving lots of animals new homes and many families a new pet.

“We have an increase in adoptions, and we actually have a Home for the Holidays Adoption Special going on to encourage people to come in and consider a shelter pet. All of our cats are 25 dollars, their normal fee is 75 dollars, and all of our large dogs are 75 dollars, and they are normally 150. Just to encourage people, if they are considering welcoming an animal into their home, to consider an animal from our shelter,” said Holly Crotty, the executive director of TAPS.

Not only is TAPS gearing up for a busy season at their facility, they have enlisted area businesses to help.

“The other thing that we are doing this holiday, is the TAPS version of the angel tree,” said Crotty. “There are 11 area businesses that have Christmas trees up with ornaments of our pets on it, trying to solicit donations of food, toys, and treats that we can use here at the shelter,”

Crotty believes adoption is a preferable alternative to buying a pet at a store because it serves a humane purpose and buying an animal can be costly.

“The biggest reason you should adopt, over going to a pet store is because of where the pet store dogs come from, and there are so many unwanted dogs in the world,” said Crotty. “It’s estimated that 3 to 5 million get euthanized every year.”

Although the holidays do make people want to add a pet to their family more than during other times of the year, Crotty said that adopting a pet is a decision that requires serious thought.

“I really encourage anyone that is considering adopting at the holidays to really think about whether this is a lifetime commitment to the pet, because animals are not meant to be gifts,” said Crotty. “Animals are lifetime commitments they are a big responsibility, and families need to consider whether they are willing to commit that as they consider adding an animal to their home during the month of December”.

One reason that many people stray away from adopting a pet is because they want a puppy or a kitten, instead of an older dog or cat, but Crotty says this should not be an issue when it comes to adopting.

“Our animals have been temperament tested, we know a little bit about their personality. Some people think they can’t get an older dog because they don’t bond, but hey bond just as well as if you take a puppy into your home” said Crotty.

The TAPS facility is well maintained and cleaned for 5 hours every morning before they open to ensure the cleanest possible environment for the animals sheltered there. Volunteers are utilized to visit with and play with the animals as well as walk the dogs four times a day.

“Some of these dogs and cats have it better than they ever have in their lives” said Fran Buchanan, a volunteer at TAPS Animal Shelter.
